Bernd joined the Wales Institute for Social and Economic Research and Data as Research Associate in 2020. He completed his PhD in Political Science at Radboud University Nijmegen and Roskilde University between 2017 and 2020. His thesis, entitled ‘Allied against austerity. Transnational cooperation in the European anti-austerity movement’ examines the wave of new activist movements emerging in response to the 2008 financial crisis and characterises their various strategies for transnational collaboration.
Bernd’s research interests revolve around the dynamics of social change and transformations of capitalism. This includes in particular the political economy of systemic crises, the mobilisation and strategies of progressive social movements, and alternative modes of economic and social reproduction such as the Social and Solidarity Economy.
His current research focuses on civil society engagement in the Foundational Economy, which involves studying how social movements use forms of active citizenship and common ownership in order to de-commodify and democratize foundational economic activities. Besides conducting research, he aims to expand WISERD’s network of contacts to enhance cooperation with international researchers and civil society stakeholders.
