This report presents the principal findings and policyimplications of a research project carried out byresearchers from the Wales Institute of Social andEconomic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD),funded by the UK Economic and Social ResearchCouncil (ESRC) and the Higher Education FundingCouncil for Wales (HEFCW). The broad aims of theresearch can be summarised as follows: firstly, todevelop a better understanding of the factors thatshape patterns of participation in higher education inWales; and secondly, to explore the particular roleplayed by policy initiatives to widen access to highereducation in contributing to these patterns.

Higher Education
