The ‘local knowledge in context’ research programme was concerned with the development and testing of ethnographic and qualitative methods for understanding place and locality in the context of community participation, regeneration and sustainablility. This suite of qualitative fieldwork projects focused on detailed and ethnographic explorations of locality; place; and the articulation of local knowledges. The projects explored different perceptions of locality: the ways in which embedded experience impacts upon local knowledges; the relations between local and other forms of knowledge; and the ways in which knowledges are represented in everyday social worlds and spaces.

The projects made a significant contribution to the methodological development and research capacity building agendas of WISERD.
