The nature of local democracy and the role of local government are changing.
A growing demand for more powers to be devolved to a local level, and widespread acknowledgement of the need for democratic renewal right across the UK, are both adding an increased urgency to the question ‘what is local government, and what do we want it to do?’
Having set a summer deadline for a map on local government reform, the Minister for Public Services, Leighton Andrews AM will open the event and present the Welsh Government’s long term vision for local councils in Wales. He was joined by an exciting programme of speakers drawn from across Wales and the UK, who explored new perspectives on local democracy and local public service delivery.
As Wales’ leading political conference this event, organised by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), offered an opportunity for delegates to join the debate and help set a deliverable vision for local government in Wales. WISERD also had an exhibition stand at this event.
