In 2016 the Public Policy Institute Wales (PPIW), now the Wales Centre for Public Policy, led an enquiry into the evidence needs of education policy in Wales. This session will provide a brief summary of PPIW’s findings, before going on to illustrate some of the ways in which administrative data could be used to address knowledge gaps within the Welsh education system. Resources of relevance to education researchers which are readily available via the Administrative Data Research Centre Wales will then be outlined, along with examples of how these data could be used for education research and evaluation. This session is introductory, requiring no prior knowledge of administrative data or data linkage, and is intended to get researchers thinking about how they could make more use of routinely collected education data.
