Cardiff Business School (CARBS) and the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) cordially invite you to a CARBS school seminar where visiting academic Prof Alex Bryson, University College London will present his research on “Human resource management in the public sector: Does it work?”.
The seminar will take place on Wednesday 24 October in Room 2.02, Postgraduate Teaching Centre, CARBS and will be introduced by Professor Keith Whitfield. Registration with refreshments will start at 16:30. The seminar will take place from 17.00-18.00 and will be followed by a drinks reception.
“Human resource management in the public sector: Does it work?”.
There is a substantial literature which proposes that private sector firms and their employees can benefit from various HR practices and intensive HRM. Concerns to promote productivity in the public sector have led to government initiatives to promote similar practices in the public sector. Drawing on two recent papers and a current project Alex will show that some of these practices can be beneficial for public sector employers while others are not. In contrast to the private sector, these practices tend not to be associated with positive outcomes for public sector employees. Alex will also consider the implications of these findings for public policy
Alex Bryson is a Professor of Quantitative Social Science at UCL’s Department of Social Science. He is also a Research Fellow at the Institute of Labour Economics (IZA) and the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) where he was previously Head of the Employment Group. His research focuses on labour economics, employment relations and programme evaluation.
