Times: Day 1 – 11.30am to 4.30pm; Day 2 – 9.00am to 3.30pm
Course Leaders: Dr Robert Berry and Dr Richard Fry, WISERD Data Team

The purpose of the workshop was to provide researchers with the skills to enable them to map their localities/study area(s) using OpenStreetMap.  Using a combination of handheld GPS units and aerial photographs, researchers will have been tasked with mapping a small urban area of Cardiff. Participants will have learned how to capture spatial data in the field using GPS, transfer the data to a computer and use it to create new OpenStreetMap map data (roads, paths, buildings, points of interest etc).

Researchers will have found these mapping skills beneficial for their own research – allowing them to map their own areas of interest and publish cartographic output in research papers free of any licensing/copyright headaches. Future Data Team workshops are planned for enabling researchers to build on these mapping skills and show them how they can analyse (spatially) the data that they have collected and mapped using GIS (Geographical Information Systems) software.
