This Workshop will bring together researchers who are interested in work that addresses the roles elites play in civil society during a period of economic austerity and political uncertainty. Building on previous cooperation between CRESC and WISERD researchers the aim will be to refine existing research activity, generate working papers and stimulate further research opportunities. This workshop will focus on three key thematic areas:

  1. Theoretical perspectives on social change, class and civil society: This session will examine key features of the UK’s changed social formation and ask what are the consequences for civil society and the state
  2. Studying Elites: This session will focus on the methodological and technical problems involved in studying elites and processes of change in civil society.
  3. Elites in perspective: This session will consider empirical work on substantive aspects of elites in UK society.
