The ADR Wales team within the Welsh Government has been shortlisted for a Civil Service Award, one of the most respected honours recognising excellence across the UK Civil Service.

The Civil Service Awards celebrate outstanding achievements across government showcasing inspirational individuals and innovative projects that deliver real benefits for citizens.

ADR Wales has been recognised alongside two fellow nominees in the Collaboration Award category, which celebrates exceptional partnership working across departments and with external organisations, including academia, enterprise, charities, and international partners. The Collaboration Award recognises projects and teams that exemplify the Civil Service Values of honesty, integrity, impartiality, and objectivity, and that demonstrate measurable benefits, tangible impact and the spirit of public service.

The team have been recognised for their work alongside data owners and analysts, that is enabling and promoting secure access to rich datasets, ranging from GP records and school results to tax contributions. The work of the ADR Wales team has allowed researchers to generate evidence that directly informs policy, improves public services, and delivers value for money. The team’s innovative analysis has shaped policy interventions in critical areas such as substance misuse treatment, mental health support in schools, homelessness prevention, and offender behaviour programmes.

Speaking of the nomination, Glyn Jones, Chief Digital Officer, Welsh Government and ADR Wales Ambassador said: “This collaboration stands as an exemplary model of how academia and the civil service can unite to drive meaningful change. By combining rigorous research with real-world policy challenges, we’ve not only enhanced technical capabilities across both sectors, but also delivered robust evidence that informs better decision-making. Ultimately, this partnership has helped improve lives across Wales and showcases the transformative potential of working together.”

Over the past 20 years, the Civil Service Awards have become a cornerstone of public sector excellence, sharing innovation, leadership, and best practice across government. This year’s competition attracted over 2,500 nominations across ten award categories.

The winners of the 2025 Civil Service Awards will be announced at a ceremony at Lancaster House in December 2025.
