Career Opportunity: Post-Doctoral Research Associate


We are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work as part of the ESRC (Economic & Social Research Council) WISERD Civil Society Research Centre at Aberystwyth University. WISERD Civil Society is a new flagship research centre funded by the ESRC to undertake an innovative and farreaching five-year research programme of multi-disciplinary, policy relevant research addressing Civil Society in Wales, the UK and Internationally. The centre is organised around eighteen work packages across four themes, and includes contributions from Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Swansea, South Wales, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Ulster, Open and Roehampton Universities.

The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University and will contribute to a work package within the WISERD/Civil Society Research Centre, ‘Language, identity and civic participation: the role of the school and voluntary organisations in Wales and Scotland’, led by Professor Rhys Jones and Dr Elin Royles (Aberystwyth University) and Professor Lindsay Paterson and Dr Fiona O’Hanlon (University of Edinburgh).  The post-holder will be responsible for data collection and analysis, as well as contributing to the broader development, delivery and dissemination of the research.

The primary responsibility of the post-holder will be to undertake research for a work package (WP2.3) on the theme of ‘Language, identity and civic participation: the role of the school and voluntary organisations in Wales and Scotland’. This project, led by Professor Rhys Jones and Dr Elin Royles (Aberystwyth University) and Professor Lindsay Paterson and Dr Fiona O’Hanlon (University of Edinburgh), investigates the role of the school, and of out-of-school bodies (for example youth clubs, sports clubs or musical activities) in influencing adolescents’ identities in Scotland and Wales. The Aberystwyth-based post, featured in this advert, will focus on the connection between education and youth identities in Wales, while another PDRA, based in the University of Edinburgh, will examine these connections in the context of Scotland. An additional PhD student, exploring the links between education and youth identity in other comparative contexts, will also be a part of the project team.
