Soft power, public diplomacy, and modernity in China and Russia

John Morgan, Honorary Professor and Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow at WISERD, based at Cardiff University has written a book review essay which has been published in the journal, Eurasian Geography and Economics.

Professor Morgan says: “There is now an extensive literature on the related concepts of soft power and modernity” and this essay reviews some notable examples. ‘Soft power, public diplomacy, and modernity in China and Russia’ looks at Chinese Soft Power, by Maria Repnikova; Russia’s Public Diplomacy: Evolution and Practice, a collection edited by Anna A. Velikaya and Greg Simons; The Handbook of Russian International Relations Studies, a collection edited by Maria Lagutina, Alexander Sergunin, and Natalia Tsvetkova; and Russia Against Modernity by Alexander Etkind.
