W. John Morgan reviews ‘The Russo-Ukrainian War’

A new book review of The Russo-Ukrainian War, by W. John Morgan, Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow at WISERD was published in the Journal of Eurasian Geography and Economics earlier this year. Professor Morgan has himself published regularly on the Soviet Union and on contemporary Russia. He has an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Russo-Ukrainian War by Serhii Plokhy, Professor of History at Harvard University and Director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, provides ‘a balanced scholarly account of the origins, development, and implications of the Russo-Ukrainian War’, says Professor Morgan. Covering recent historical context including the illegal annexation of the Crimea in 2014 and the full scale war launched by Putin’s Russia in 2022, to Ukraine’s self-defence and attempts at counteroffensives, Professor Morgan asserts that this book is ‘a significant scholarly achievement in the circumstances’ and ‘stands out as the best-informed and most reliable account yet available’.

W. John Morgan is also Professor Emeritus at the School of Education, University of Nottingham, where he held the UNESCO Chair of the Political Economy of Education, and Honorary Professor at the School of Educational Sciences, University of Jordan.
