Morgan, W. J. (2025). Higher education in Russia: by Yaroslav Kuzminov and Maria Yudkevich, with a foreword by Phillip G. Altbach, Baltimore, MD, Johns Hopkins University Press, 2022, xxxviii+389 pp., US$59.95 (paperback), ISBN 978-1-4214-4414-7. Canadian Slavonic Papers, 1–2.

Russia has always been an important country and, given the circumstances of contemporary geopolitics, an accurate account of its system of higher education is of considerable interest. This book is therefore welcome, as it is well written, comprehensive, and up to date. The authors, Yaroslav Kuzminov and Maria Yudkevich, are well placed to write such a book. In 1991, Kuzminov was the founding rector of the Higher School of Economics, the most prominent of the post-Soviet private Russian universities; he retained his office until 2021. Yudkevich is at the Centre for Institutional Studies and a current vice-rector of the Higher School of Economics. The book includes a foreword by Phillip Altbach of Boston College’s Centre for International Higher Education.
