Kate completed her PhD entitled: Narratives of Postcolonialism in Liminal Space: The Place called Phoenix Park in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University in 2007. She then worked in the Wales Rural Observatory for two years where she conducted a series of localities studies in ‘deep rural’ areas across Wales.
Kate’s research is concerned with the way people, in particular young people, come to know and talk about ‘their’ places. Using qualitative methods, and mobile methods in particular, Kate is interested in the ways places are constructed through different discourses and the ways people who live in them, move through them and visit them are positioned. To this end, Kate is interested in the interactions between policy, history and place-making.
Kate is one of the localities researchers in WISERD, and is the linked researcher to the Education and Young People’s theme. This ties in with her other research in the KLiC project, ‘Young People and Place, where she is conducting qualitative work with young people in the Heads of the Valleys.
