What Wales Thinks? Political attitudes and community perceptions across Wales.
One innovation of the Welsh Election Study 2026 is the collection of data about political attitudes using surveys in combination with focus group conversations. We explore how people across Wales experience their local area and communities, what they identify as the most important challenges, and how they evaluate parties’ abilities to respond to those challenges. Our analysis reveals that people are generally satisfied with their life and the place they are living in but feel that the economic situation has gotten worse. With regards to public services, the analysis of our pre-election data reveals significant geographic disparities in perceptions of the availability of affordable housing, of well-paying jobs and quality of health services. The qualitative data from focus groups further shows the localised variation of access to key infrastructure such as water or public transport posing challenges for any new Government to develop place-based policy solutions.
