Rhian graduated from Cardiff University in 2012 with a degree in Law and Sociology (LLB). Following this she worked for NHS Wales as part of the Continuing Healthcare project. In 2015, she returned to Cardiff University to study the MSc Social Research Methods (distinction). Rhian then began her ESRC funded PhD studentship with WISERD Civil Society in October 2016. Her research is supervised by Prof. Sally Power and Prof. Chris Taylor.
Rhian’s research explores the dilemmas which can arise when people think about leaving an inheritance. It is about the ways in which testators seek to balance perceived competing rights and obligations between the self, the family, charitable organisations and the state. The research aims to provide an insight into how civil society, the family and wealth are regarded and elicit understanding about the long-term sustainability of charities.
