Presented by Professor W. John Morgan, WISERD Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow, and Civil Society research network
As we move through the 21st century marked by armed conflict, obscurantism, fundamentalism, and intolerance of other points of view, intellectual and cultural cooperation is essential to sustaining our common humanity. Such exchange has been justified by an humanitarian ideal of a global common good as the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated. At the same time, it has been an instrument of ideological ‘soft power’ or cultural diplomacy. The seminar will consider the tension between these idealist and realist perspectives on the politics of international intellectual cooperation.
