Perspectives on civic stratification and civil repair

This week’s online seminar will be presented by Ian Rees Jones

Almost a quarter of a century ago David Lockwood argued that social cohesion was inextricably linked to the institutional unity of citizenship, market and bureaucracy.  He proposed a model of Civic Stratification that refers to both the systemic denial and granting of rights. This takes a variety of forms and connects formal exclusions and inclusions with informal constructions of status. This talk considers how this framework might be adapted and extended to inform studies of how civil society is affected by, responds to and contributes to forms of civic stratification and the potential civil society organisations have for promoting civil repair.
