This was an evaluation of Pori Drwy Stori, a bilingual reading intervention designed to raise educational outcomes for young children by increasing the quality and quantity of adult-child interactions around reading in the home learning environment (HLE). This evaluation hoped to explore how the Pori Drwy Stori resources and support materials are adopted by parents and practitioners, and the extent to which they were increasing or improving:
- the quality time that families spend together
- attitudes by parents/carers to reading and books (for themselves and their child)
- the number of rhymes known by parents /carers and their children
- parental confidence around sharing books, stories and rhymes and in being a partner in their child’s learning over time.
It attempted to document and critically appraise the experience of children, parents and practitioners in the first three years of its operation in the light of its aims and objectives.
This evaluation incorporated innovative and creative approaches to both data collection and analysis. These include support and reward strategies for data collection with hard-to reach parents, ethnographic research in the home and surveys that will gather data from parents and teachers surrounding the efficiency of the resources in their stated outcomes.
This research was commensurate with the aims of WISERD and WISERD Education, looking at young people and education. It built on previous work completed by the two researchers, developing expertise in the home learning environment (HLE), young people and engagement, and learning and developing methodological insights.
