I am a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Brasilia. Through the Erasmus+ programme, I spent six months on a research placement at the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. I have been based in the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD).
At WISERD I had the opportunity to attend a number of weekly interdisciplinary seminars and to discuss several research subjects with other academics. I was supervised by Professor Sin Yi Cheung who helped me to shape and clarify my research question, and suggested important insights. Also, I had the opportunity to attend lectures and seminars at the School of Social Sciences, held by Dr Shailen Nandy.
At a SURDUBB seminar I presented my doctoral study, Beyond income: non-material dimensions of poverty, which was a great opportunity to share my initial findings and discuss my methodological approach with other researchers. At this time, I received many helpful contributions and practical suggestions.
This period at Cardiff University and at WISERD have been very important for my academic life. I have really improved my work in progress and had insight into new research topics. I would like to thank the WISERD team who always gave me practical support and provided me with a warm atmosphere.
All these experiences gave me more tools to succeed in my professional career. I am grateful for the opportunity to take part in this initiative and for sure, I will share this knowledge with my work colleagues at the Brazilian Government and my classmates at University of Brasilia.
