WISERD Director Professor Ian Rees Jones pays tribute to Geoff Whitty, Director Emeritus of the UCL Institution of Education (IOE) and a member of the WISERD Advisory Board, who sadly passed away last week.

“It is a great sadness to hear the news of the death of Professor Geoff Whitty CBE. Over a long and highly influential career, Geoff had held the prestigious Karl Mannheim Chair of Sociology of Education and was Director of the Institute of Education.

More recently he held a Research Professorship at Bath Spa University and a Global Innovation Chair at the University of Newcastle in Australia.  He had an international reputation for research and scholarship in the fields of education policy and teacher education.

In collaboration with Professor Sally Power he contributed to cutting edge research on the long-term outcomes of government policy interventions. Geoff was a committed member of the WISERD Advisory Board and gave his invaluable advice freely and enthusiastically and with his guidance WISERD was able to extend and deepen its programme of education research.

He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

The Institute of Education have published an appreciation of Geoff which is available here: https://ioelondonblog.wordpress.com/2018/07/29/geoff-whitty-an-appreciation/
