The funding is for an Understanding Society Policy Fellowship, which will fund a one year research project called ‘Social action as a route to the ballot box: can volunteering reduce inequalities in turnout?’. Working with a wide range of stakeholders and partners (such the Welsh Government, the Wales Council for Voluntary Associations and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations), the project will examine the potential for volunteering schemes such as National Citizen Service to reduce the turnout gap young people and their elders in elections throughout the UK. It will also explore whether volunteering can be particularly beneficial in helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to vote as well. The project will conclude in February 2018 by producing a briefing paper containing policy recommendations for the UK, Welsh and Scottish governments about how they can use their support for volunteering schemes to help reduce the under-representation of young voters in our political debates.
The project is due to start in October 2019 and will run until March 2020.
