Professor Gareth Rees has been elected to the Fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales in the most recent round of nominations.

Fellows are elected to the Society for demonstrating a record of excellence and achievement in academia and for making distinguished contributions to the world of learning that are used by other learned societies.

Director of WISERD since September 2010, Professor Rees joined Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences in 1999. He is well-known for his research on education and regional economic development, especially in relation to participation in lifelong learning.

Professor Rees has also researched extensively on the relationships between devolved forms of governance and the development and implementation of education and training policy. Most recently, he presented a keynote address at the WISERD Annual Conference on higher education, social mobility and locality in Wales.

The Learned Society of Wales was established in May 2010 in the absence of a national society of learning in Wales. Its aims are to demonstrate, celebrate and disseminate the excellence of Welsh research and scholarship, and to enhance the nation’s profile across the UK and internationally.
