Robin James Smith is Professor of Sociology in the School of Social and Spatial Sciences, and Visiting Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. His connection with WISERD goes back to the original localities research program where he was a research associate, with Tom Hall, on the “Urban Patrols” project. This ethnographic project documented the practices of a range of work that takes place on foot, in the city centre, and, primarily, the work of urban outreach. This project produced a series of articles concerned with movement, knowledge, and need. Since then, he has pursued his central interests in mobility, interaction, and categorisation across a range of settings including cycle lane and traffic disputes, policing and its public understanding, and mountain rescue work. Most recently, he is working on projects relating to the consequences of the introduction of robots to public spaces and, coming full circle, how they, inter alia, illuminate a potentially reordered moral geography of urban space.
