Dr Stephen Drinkwater gave a presentation Workers Educational Association in Llanelli to celebrate their centenary.
On Saturday 7th June, Dr Drinkwater delivered a presentation focusing on recent and possible future economic and demographic developments in the Llanelli area. The event, held at the Furnace Theatre, was well attended with guests including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
‘The presentation that I gave focused on recent and possible future economic and demographic developments in the Llanelli area,’ explains Dr Drinkwater, ‘It began by placing the local experience into a national and international context through a brief overview of what happened in the lead up to and in the aftermath of the Great Recession.’
‘Key economic indicators were then presented for Llanelli and comparison areas including on economic output/activity, earnings, employment and unemployment. This was followed by an analysis of how the Llanelli area changed in terms of its demographic profile between 2001 and 2011 (using Census data). Two key aspects were focused upon: changes in the age profile of the local population and the increase in migration to the area. In terms of possible future developments, population and growth projections were presented as well as a discussion on how the employment structure is likely to change over the next decade or so.’
