With Professor Dawn Brooker, University of Worcester
Extra care services have been developed across the UK as an alternative to care home placement. One of the aims of extra care services is to support people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, through the provision of an accessible physical environment and associated flexible care and support. Whilst extra care is proving successful for many older people, there is evidence to suggest that when some service users develop dementia, they are at higher risk of going into a care home. The Enriched Opportunities Programme (EOP) was developed by Professor Dawn Brooker (University of Worcester) in partnership with the Extra Care Charitable Trust to better support people who develop dementia in extra care settings. A randomised control study evidenced the effectiveness of this programme.
This workshop included presentations by Dawn Brooker and Guy Page (previously Extra Care Charitable Trust) on the VIPS person centred care model and the EOP programme. It was of particular interest to service development managers and practitioners working with people who are living with dementia.
