In the last two decades the Brazilian higher education has undergone massive expansion. However there has been very little empirical and longitudinal analyses on the system diversification. The aim of the present research is to contribute to the literature about institutional differentiation analysing the Brazilian case. The research draws on the public data of the Higher Education Census from 2002 to 2016, which is the most comprehensive research instrument on public and private higher education institutions in the country.
