Whilst the scale, scope and nature of social enterprises has been researched the challenges that they face, such as their interdependencies with the commercial sector and funding providers, remain unexplored (Huybrechts and Nicholls, 2013; Peattie and Morley, 2008). The growing significance of these organisations and the necessity to support their successful evolution to become self-sustaining and engage with the wider community of stakeholders, demands that their specific issues are identified and explored in detail.

In order to explore the interdependencies and vagaries of social enterprise the workshop was attended by representatives from academia, national government, local authorities, commercial organisations and social enterprises.

Key Note Speakers

Professor Ken Peattie (Cardiff University Business School) Director of ESRC Centre for Sustainable Places

Jan Bennett, former Business Enterprise Support Manager Council and Head of Business and Enterprise Support at Caerphilly County Borough.
