I’m a geographer working in field of research called geocomputation, which is concerned with the use of computational methods for processing, analysing, and visualising geographic data.
I’m currently Research Officer at the Albert Gubay Business School, Bangor University, on a Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES) project, funded by the Welsh Government SMART Partnership scheme and delivered with Community Energy Wales and Ynni Teg. We’re building a decision-support tool that shows communities where small-scale renewable energy schemes are feasible, bringing together open spatial data, electricity network data and evidence from community groups. I’m leading the development, which means designing and building the whole system: the engineering that pulls the data together and keeps it current, and the mapping tools people will actually use. I also hold a visiting fellowship in geoinformatics at the University of South Wales.
My wider research interests include the integration of natural language processing (NLP), AI, and geographical information systems (GIS), and developing automated computing solutions for tackling complex and data-intensive geospatial analysis problems. I also maintain an interest in the application of 3D landscape visualisation technologies for collaborative environmental planning.
