Alex is a medical sociologist. Her research has focused on the care of older people in emergency and acute care, and, more recently, engages with the social and ethical aspects of dementia diagnosis and what it means to live well with dementia. The themes in her research reflect broader sociological concerns, including the sociology of risk and experiences of precarity; relations of care; and identity in the context of living with an illness. She is currently a co-investigator on the ‘Improving the Experience of Dementia and Enhancing Active life (IDEAL)’ programme of research which is funded by the Alzheimer’s Society and follows a large cohort of people living with dementia in the UK over time.  She is interested in developing new research related to ageing and dementia and is excited about building new collaborations within the centre and at Exeter.
