Rhian has a background in socio-legal studies, having graduated from Cardiff University with an undergraduate degree in Law and Sociology (LLB). Following this, she undertook a MSc in Social Science Research Methods and an ESRC funded PhD at Cardiff University. Her PhD research was a qualitative study exploring what inheritance decisions and dilemmas can reveal about people’s relationships to civil society, family and the State. This was an exploratory research project which explored the ‘public’ and ‘private’ dimensions of the bequest decision-making process. The research addressed significant themes such as fairness, equality and intergenerational relationships. During her PhD, Rhian undertook an internship at the Senedd working as a researcher supporting the team responsible for the passing of the Senedd and Elections (Wales) Act 2020. The Act delivered several key reforms, including the lowering of the minimum voting age in Senedd elections to 16. She also undertook work as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of Social Sciences, carrying out seminars and workshops on two undergraduate modules.

Rhian’s current research interests include intergenerational relationships and tensions; equality and rights; civic participation; and the relationship between the individual, civil society and the State. She is particularly interested in research with a socio-legal aspect, and research with a Welsh focus.
