He is Honorary Professor, School of Social Sciences and Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow, at the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data, and Methods. He is also Emeritus Professor of Comparative Education, the University of Nottingham, where he was UNESCO Chair of the Political Economy of Education; Senior Fellow, the China Policy Institute; and Acting-Director of the Institute of Asian Pacific Studies. He was Chair of the UK National Commission for UNESCO 2010-2013 and a Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioner for the UK 2002-2008.
He has also been a Workers’ Educational Association tutor-organizer and as a college lecturer. He is a Distinguished Professor of the International Institute of Adult and Lifelong Education, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the Royal Anthropological Institute, the Learned Society of Wales, and the Royal Historical Society; and is D.Sc. (hc) Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences. His current research is on the comparative political economy of education: especially Russia and China; civil society and the anthropology of knowledge; and international intellectual co-operation and cultural Cold War.
